WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): Purdue University says it’s investigating five confirmed or probable cases of mumps on its West Lafayette campus.

Purdue says it’s working with the Tippecanoe County and state health departments to identify and notify anyone who may have been in close contact with these cases.

Purdue also is encouraging members of the university community to check their vaccination records to make sure they’re protected from contracting the virus.

Mumps is spread by sneezing and coughing. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, swollen glands and loss of appetite.

Mumps cases also have been reported this year on at least three other college campuses: Indiana University-Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Butler University, also in Indianapolis.
