INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WOWO) A new measure in the Indiana House of Representatives could change the way the state selects its lieutenant governor. House Bill 1022 would allow gubernatorial nominees to choose their running mate after the primary election, rather than having political party delegates make the decision.
The proposal comes after the 2024 Republican convention, when delegates selected Micah Beckwith over Governor Mike Braun’s preferred candidate. Supporters of HB 1022 say the change would give candidates more control over their campaign team and align Indiana with practices in other states.
More than a dozen states, including Illinois and Kentucky, already use a “governor-select” system, in which candidates choose their lieutenant governor after winning their party’s nomination. Proponents argue that this approach strengthens the ticket and ensures voters know both candidates before the general election.
House Bill 1022 is currently under consideration by lawmakers in the Indiana House of Representatives. If passed, it would mark a significant shift in the state’s electoral process for executive offices.
