MADISON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana officials are warning people visiting the Ohio River that toxic algae blooms have been found on part of the river's Indiana waters.

A recreational advisory issued Friday by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management covers the river and its tributaries from the Indiana-Ohio state line to the Cannelton Locks and Dam near Tell City.

The advisory urges people to avoid direct contact with water that's visibly impacted by blue-green algae that appears as slicks of bright-green paint.

It also urges people to use warm, soapy water to wash off if they have contact with the water and to prevent their pets from entering the river.

The Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission says algae blooms were first discovered on the river last month in West Virginia and have spread downstream.
