Indiana State Historical Marker in Marion to Recognize Plato

MARION, Ind. (AP) _ An Indiana State Historical Marker recognizing a prominent African-American architect and builder who achieved national recognition for his innovative and imaginative designs is going to be dedicated in Marion on Saturday.

The marker will commemorate Samuel Plato. The ceremony will be held 3:30 p.m. at the Hostess House.

The marker will tell people that Plato lived in Marion from 1903-1921 and that his work on federal housing earned praise from first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Plato broke racial barriers and integrated black and white workers on his projects and won trade union membership for black craftsmen.  He was the first black to be awarded a contract to build a post office, building a total of 39 across the country.

The dedication is part of a daylong event to commemorate Plato.
