INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO):  Dozens of children in Indianapolis are set to receive brand-new bicycles this week through a partnership aimed at promoting bicycle safety and encouraging outdoor activity.

On Thursday morning, The Salvation Army of Central Indiana and Dan Dakich’s nonprofit organization, Cycles for the City, will host a bicycle safety event at the Salvation Army’s headquarters.

Children participating in summer day camps, along with those staying at the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center, will take part in training focused on safe riding practices and the rules of the road.

Following the safety lessons, each child will receive a new bicycle, helmet and lock to take home.

Organizers say the event is designed to provide children with both the equipment and knowledge needed to ride safely while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.

The bicycle giveaway is part of ongoing efforts by community organizations to support families and provide opportunities for children throughout central Indiana.

The event is scheduled for Thursday at The Salvation Army of Central Indiana headquarters in Indianapolis.
