INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indianapolis police detective is gearing up for a 3,000-mile cross-country walk to raise money for military veterans and their families.

Detective David Roth is chairman of the board for the military support group Helping Hands for Freedom. He tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1G4Wr1e ) he hopes to raise about $3 million to build a retreat for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or other issues.

Roth is already training for the Route for the Brave walk. It is scheduled to begin in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on April 28, 2016, and end in San Francisco that August.

The 46-year-old Roth says he was motivated to raise money for veteran issues in part by his stepson, Matt Coleman. The father of four is being deployed for a fifth time.
