INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Public safety leaders from Detroit, Chicago, Gary and other urban areas will share strategies for reducing homicides when they meet in Indianapolis later this year while a near-record homicide rate plagues Indiana's capital.
U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett announced Tuesday the Sept. 3-5 summit will bring together dozens of Justice Department officials from around the country. They'll also include leaders from Philadelphia; St. Louis; Louisville, Kentucky; and Nashville, Tennessee.
Indianapolis has had at least 62 homicides through the first five months of the year and could rival the record 162 in 1998 at a time when slayings are declining in in large cities such as Chicago and New York.
Hogsett says best practices to prevent violence that are working in other urban areas need to be brought to Indianapolis.
