LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): An Indiana Department of Transportation spokeswoman says the state has seen an 80 percent reduction in severe crossover median crashes along highways where cable barriers have been installed.

 
Debbie Calder tells the Journal & Courier the state plans to add 11 more miles of cables along Interstate 65 in White and Tippecanoe counties. She says bids are expected to open in summer 2014. About 340 miles of the 3-foot-high barriers have been installed in Indiana since 2005.
 
The cables are designed to give way and entangle out-of-control vehicles, preventing them from re-entering traffic. State police Sgt. Kim Riley says since the cable barriers were installed in the Lafayette area in 2009 not one passenger vehicle has crossed through the barriers.
