Inmate’s apparent suicide at county jail is probed

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP): Authorities are investigating the apparent suicide of a 31-year-old inmate at a central Indiana jail.

Police say Ashley Lee Myers was found hanging Friday afternoon in a cell in the intake area of the Delaware County Jail. He was later pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

County Coroner Scott Hahn said Saturday his office doesn't know what the Muncie man may have used to hang himself.

Myers had been arrested earlier Friday on warrants stemming from a child-support case. Police say Myers was the only person in the cell when he was discovered hanging.

County Sheriff Mike Scroggins tells The Star Press Myers' death was under investigation, but he couldn't speculate on how long Myers may have been unobserved in the holding cell.
