IU Student Dies One Day After Fall Down Staircase

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana University student has died one day after suffering a serious head injury in a fall down a basement staircase during an off-campus party.

IU interim police chief Laury Flint says 19-year-old Rachael Fiege of Zionsville died Saturday morning at IU Health Bloomington Hospital after being taken off life support. She had been in critical condition since Friday.

IU spokesman Mark Land tells The Indianapolis Star Fiege was attending a party with friends at an off-campus house when she fell down a basement staircase early Friday.

Land says Fiege's friends did not realize the extent of her injuries and did not call 911 for about six hours after noticing she appeared not to be breathing.

Campus police are still investigating Fiege's death and toxicology tests are pending.
