Sheriff Deputy Stuck in Car after Crash

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Saturday night, a Steuben County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a single vehicle crash, that left the Deputy pinned inside the car for an hour.

The accident happened just before midnight on SR 327 just north of CR 400 S. The deputy was traveling southbound in a police cruiser. 

Just prior to the crash, deputies and the Indiana State Police were responding to the Story Lake area to assist DeKalb County police with a 911 call reporting a man with a gun threatening to shoot people at a large gathering.

According to police, the deputy came up to another vehicle entering the roadway. The deputy tried to avoid hitting the other car, went slightly off the road, began to lose control and hit a tree.

The deputy was pinned in the patrol car for over an hour requiring extrication by fire rescue agencies.

The deputy was flown from the crash to a hospital in Fort Wayne. The deputy sustained a head injury, ankle injury and wrist injury. The name of the deputy is being withheld to make sure family members have been notified.

The crash remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
