BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University officials are hailing the arrival of a new supercomputer that they say could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in grants for the university.
Big Red II is one of the 50 fastest supercomputers in the world and the fastest one in the United States to be funded and owned by a university.
The $7.5-million machine can analyze digital texts, simulate the creation of stars and sequence 5,000 genomes. It is expected to expand IU’s work in life sciences and support research in more than 150 areas.
Specialists are tuning up the supercomputer ahead of its test drive in June.
