BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ The last day on the job has arrived for about 130 workers at a southern Indiana refrigerator factory.
The job cuts taking effect Friday at the GE Appliances in Bloomington are slightly less than the reduction of 160 positions that the company announced in early September.
Union local president Carven Thomas tells The Herald-Times that negotiations with company officials kept about 25 jobs. The job cuts involved 56 layoffs and 75 early retirements.
GE officials blamed the job cuts on less demand for the side-by-side refrigerators made at the factory.
The company had announced plans three years ago for a $161 million investment and 200 more jobs at the plant, but it says the sales decline caused it to drop those plans.
