SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A new round of lake-effect snow is snarling traffic in northern Indiana, with a blast of Arctic air sending wind chills below zero for most of the state.

A section of the U.S. 31 bypass east of South Bend was closed for a time Tuesday morning because of crashes. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for LaPorte, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties, with about 5 inches of snowfall reported in Mishawaka but little further south.

Many school districts across the state have delayed openings Tuesday as temperatures across the state hovered around 10 degrees.

Gusts reaching 25 mph pushed wind chills to about 5 below zero in South Bend and Indianapolis and near zero in far southern Indiana around Evansville.
