INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A 50-car train has delivered the last load of coal to the 120-year-old Perry K Steam Plant in downtown Indianapolis.

 

Citizens Energy Group vice president of energy operations Chris Braun says once that coal is gone, the plant will be fueled by natural gas. Officials say three of the plant boilers have already been converted to natural gas and the final boiler will be converted by June.

 

The plant produces steam for many large buildings, hospitals and industries in downtown Indianapolis. Citizens Energy says it will clean the plant's ash silos, its exterior walls, and paint the stacks. It says several companies have already expressed interest in purchasing the locomotive and rail cars used to transport the coal.
