COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Backers can begin collecting signatures for a ballot effort to limit the time lawmakers could serve in the Ohio Legislature.
The state's Ballot Board certified the proposal as a single issue on Friday. That means supporters can begin gathering the roughly 306,000 signatures needed to place the issue on 2016 ballots.
Ohioans voted in 1992 to limit state representatives to four, two-year terms and senators to two, four-year terms. That doesn't bar them from moving between the House and Senate once they've reached those limits or running again after a few years.
The proposed constitutional amendment would limit state legislators to no more than eight years in a chamber and 12 total combined years at the Statehouse. Should it pass, the years accrued prior to passage wouldn't count.
