FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Liberty Mills Road trail will be expanding a half mile.

Residents, Fort Wayne Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer, members of the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission and the city of Fort Wayne’s Greenway and Trails staff met Tuesday to break ground on the Liberty Mills Road trail extension, according to the city of Fort Wayne.

“Many residents use this trail for exercise and recreation, but we know a growing number of residents are relying on our trails as a safe way to connect to area businesses and other destinations,” said Dawn Ritchie, Greenways and Trails director for the city of Fort Wayne. “This gets us closer to connecting residents to amenities they access on a daily basis. Things like a grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, a library and a higher education institution.”

The investment for this phase of construction is $263,402. The funding is coming from the Coventry Lane Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The construction is expected to be finished in November.

When the construction is complete, there will be another phase that will connect the trail to destination points such as businesses.
