VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP): A 20-year-old northern Indiana man convicted of murder in his former girlfriend’s shooting has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
 
The Times of Munster reports Porter Superior Judge Bill Alexa sentenced Dustin McCowan on Thursday in the 2011 murder of 19-year-old Amanda Bach of Portage. McCowan declined an opportunity to speak before sentencing, saying he didn’t think the court deserved it.
 
Police said McCowan shot Bach after she showed up at the house where he was living with his father. Bach’s partially clothed body was found the following day in a wooded area nearby.
 
The victim’s father, Bill Bach, called the sentence bittersweet, saying he wished McCowan could have been sentenced to life without parole.
 
Alexa appointed the public defender’s office to work on an appeal.
