Man Tells Jury About Futile Attempt to Rescue Blast Victim

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A resident who rushed to help after a huge explosion rocked his Indianapolis neighborhood has told a jury about his futile attempt to rescue a man who died from the blast.

Bryan Hollingsworth testified Monday that he heard John “Dion'' Longworth calling for help and saw him through a hole into Longworth's basement. Hollingsworth said Longworth asked about his wife who was in an upstairs bedroom, but that he couldn't bring himself to tell Longworth that the home's second floor had been blown away.

Monday began the second week of testimony in Mark Leonard's trial. Leonard faces murder charges in the deaths of John and Jennifer Longworth, who lived next door to the house he shared with his girlfriend.
The 2012 explosion damaged or destroyed about 80 homes.
