Mayor Says Fort Wayne is “Becoming a Jewel”

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Mayor Tom Henry delivered his State of the City address this afternoon, in it he talked about successes.

Painting the picture of a city that's on the move, Henry said Fort Wayne was a community and the “envy of the state.”

The Mayor pointed to job growth and how 29 companies expanded in the city In 2013. In the process, more than new 900 jobs were created and another 4,000 were retained. Henry estimated more than $160 million dollars pumped into the city.

The discussion highlighted downtown developments such as the Ash Brokerage building and a number of street and infrastructure improvement projects.

He also tackled challenges, including violent crime. Henry called it a difficult year, and says leaders are focused on reversing the trend. One way is by adding 22 officers this year and and more next year, thanks to a federal grant.

He talked about restoring the public safety director Rusty York and new police chief Gary Hamilton and the strategic ways that will help the battle against crime.

He also promises a new violent crimes unit will start before the end of the month.
