Mayor Works to Gain Health Department Waiver for “The Deck”

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Mayor Tom Henry is throwing his support to The Deck.

It's a popular downtown destination operated by Hall's Gas House. Earlier this week, they were told they needed to get a waiver from the State Board of Health to operate as an open-air bar.

Mayor Henry says the city is working with health officials to find a solution. Owners say they are committed to opening as scheduled in May.

The Mayor says The Deck is an important part of Fort Wayne's downtown experience.

The Mayor's Statement is below:

Our community is united and excited for riverfront development and how we can build tremendous assets for everyone to enjoy.

With the recent completion of the riverfront development study, we must move forward to create a riverfront experience that enhances our quality of place and sets us apart as a regional attraction for visitors, businesses, economic development opportunities, and jobs.

We’re working proactively to have discussions with the Indiana State Department of Health, and the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health to reach a sensible resolution for The Deck’s outdoor dining operations.

My office is prepared to do all we can to make sure the needs of our residents and businesses are being met.
