Michigan State Police Leadership Faces Oversight Scrutiny

LANSING, MI (WOWO) A new report from state lawmakers accuses leaders of the Michigan State Police of abuse of power, mismanagement, and actions that have damaged morale within the agency.

The report, compiled by the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee, is based on interviews with current and former employees, a legislative hearing, and a review of internal documents. According to reporting from WWMT, the findings describe historically low morale and a breakdown of trust between rank-and-file troopers and agency leadership.

The report centers on Michigan State Police Director Colonel James Grady and his deputy, Lieutenant Colonel Aimee Brimacombe. Lawmakers cited a vote of no confidence in leadership, noting that nearly all troopers and a majority of command officers supported it during Brimacombe’s tenure.

The committee questioned Grady’s promotion to director, citing limited command experience, and raised similar concerns about Brimacombe. The report also highlights disputed promotions and demotions, alleged favoritism at the Flint post that led to a lawsuit, and claims that leadership decisions were made without senior staff input.

Additional allegations include improper bonuses, over-reliance on Brimacombe, and multiple internal investigations involving her conduct. Lawmakers said those issues contributed to high turnover and a culture focused on self-preservation rather than performance.

House leaders said the findings raise concerns about public safety. In a statement, Grady said he remains focused on supporting MSP members and providing public safety services. Brimacombe did not comment and recently announced plans to retire. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office has previously said she maintains confidence in Grady.
