Mother, Newborn Recovering after Fatal Crash

LAPEL, Ind. (AP) – A central Indiana woman injured when an off-duty police officer crashed into her car has delivered a healthy baby at an Indianapolis hospital.

WTHR-TV reports Autumn Sperry was delivered by emergency C-section Sunday. Her mother, 22-year-old Rebecca Sperry, also remains hospitalized.

The woman's husband, 23-year-old Jesse Sperry, died in the crash when the car driven by his wife went off Indiana 32 near the town of Lapel and struck a utility pole, crushing the car's passenger's side

Police say Edgewood police Officer James Foutch was off duty when his SUV ran into the back of the Pendleton couple's car.

Foutch bonded out on preliminary driving while intoxicated charges and was placed on administrative leave.

Police say they confiscated Foutch's cellphone. He could not be reached for comment.
