INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): The National Federation of Independent Business urges Senators Dan Coats and Joe Donnelly to oppose legislation that would raise the minimum wage by almost 40 percent by the year 2015, with annual increases based on inflation. Sen. Harry Reid is expected to move legislation that would increase federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9.15 an hour next year and $10.10 within two years. The NFIB claims that small businesses in Indiana won’t be able to pay the increase because they would then have to raise their prices and can’t cut costs any other way. The small business group also says that only 2.8 percent of hourly Hoosier workers earn minimum wage and many are teens and young adults who aren't struggling to raise families. The bill could be voted on as early as next week.
