TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – Officials in Terre Haute don't know how deep a sinkhole under a major downtown street may be, but they intend to find out.

A block of South Seventh Street will be closed beginning Monday so crews can repair the damage. The street could be closed for up to two weeks.

At this point, the sinkhole causes a depression in the street above. But Scott Barbour of the city's engineering department tells the Tribune-Star that officials don't know how deep the void beneath the street is.

Barbour says an aging sewer beneath the road has allowed soil under the pavement to drop into the pipe, causing the sinkhole.

Officials hope to complete the repairs before a downtown festival scheduled for Aug. 23.
