Pedestrian hit, killed by Winona Lake police car

WARSAW, Ind. (WOWO): The Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County FACT team are investigating an accident that left a 67-year-old Warsaw woman dead.

According to a department press release, Sharon Mitterling was walking across Husky Trail north of Harrison School when she was hit by a marked police car driven by 30-year-old officer John Leeper of Warsaw. She died on her way to a Fort Wayne hospital.

Leeper told investigators he was on his way to work when she walked in front of his car, and he was unable to swerve or stop in time. He submitted to alcohol and drug tests.

Mitterling was wearing a jacket with a hood pulled over her head at the time, apparently in a hurry to check her mail just across from her house. Police note the hood may have kept her from seeing Leeper’s car.
