Poet Angelou Cancels Indiana Appearance Over Health

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Poet and author Maya Angelou has canceled an appearance in Indianapolis this week due to health reasons.

Butler University announced Tuesday that the 85-year-old Angelou would not appear on the campus Thursday as scheduled.

Butler says Angelou was hospitalized briefly this week for an undisclosed ailment. She has been discharged and is recovering at home in North Carolina, but her medical team required that she avoid traveling for three to four weeks.

Angelou was scheduled to speak as part of Butler’s Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. The university says it and Angelou hope to reschedule her appearance in the fall.

Among Angelou’s books is the 1969 autobiographical work “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”
