INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indianapolis police say a man fatally shot by an officer during a struggle first knocked a stun gun from the officer’s hand.

Police say 44-year-old Kevin Hicks died at the scene of the shooting Tuesday night on the city’s east side. They say the unidentified officer has been treated for a possible broken hand, a human bite wound to the same hand, contusions to his face and a possible concussion.

Police say the encounter began when Hicks’ wife parked next to the officer’s car at a gas station and said Hicks was assaulting her. Witnesses say that after knocking away the stun gun, Hicks may have tried to grab the officer’s firearm before the officer discharged the weapon.

Police learned afterward there was a warrant for Hicks’ arrest.
