Police: Officer Hurt, Suspect Dead in Indianapolis Shootout

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indianapolis police say an officer was injured and a suspect was killed in a shootout on the city's east side.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the incident occurred Thursday night at an apartment complex. The department says the officer was conducting a traffic stop when the suspect got out of the car and fled on foot.

Police say the suspect began shooting at the pursuing officer. The department says a private security guard witnessed the incident and joined the officer in an “intense firefight'' against the suspect.

The department says the officer was shot in the foot and taken to a local hospital in good condition. The suspect was shot multiple times and later died at a hospital.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
