Police: Suspect admitted setting Evansville fire…

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Evansville police say a man charged in connection with an apartment building fire that killed 3 people admitted to detectives that he set the fire.

A probable cause affidavit released Tuesday says 31-year-old Christopher Compton admitted setting a jacket on fire in a hallway. The affidavit says a lighter was found in his possession but doesn't reveal why Compton set the fire Monday.

Compton faces three counts of murder and four counts of arson. He was being held without bond. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

Authorities say four people jumped from a second-story window to escape the blaze, and three of them were hospitalized. Two were airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.

The affidavit says Compton told an acquaintance he set the fire and that man alerted police.
