Public Invited To Weigh In On Allen County Casino Debate

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – Allen County residents will get their chance to publicly weigh in on a proposed casino next week during a County Council public meeting.

It’s happening Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.

Council member Lindsey Hammond said community input has been largely absent from the discussion, especially after a letter from the Fort Wayne mayor and Allen County commissioners supporting a casino and outlining a tax revenue plan.

That proposal would distribute 60 percent of casino revenue to local communities based on population, while 40 percent would fund humanitarian programs addressing mental health, homelessness, addiction and related issues.

21 Alive News says the council is not taking a position and scheduled the forum before lawmakers decide on casino legislation. State bills could allow relocation or addition of a casino license locally.
