Railroad Center in Hammond Could Bring 200 Jobs

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) _ A proposed multi-tenant railroad maintenance and distribution center in Hammond will likely bring more than 200 jobs to the area.

ThruPort Intermodal, LLC is seeking to develop 155 acres in the city's East Gibson Yard Development Area for the project. An attorney representing the firm says a development agreement still needs to be approved by the Hammond Redevelopment Council and City Council, but the deal is nearly complete.

The Munster Times reports the firm is hoping to secure $2 million in tax increment financing to help cover infrastructure costs. A $3.5 million building, railroad tracks and other infrastructure will be included in the first phase of the project.

The company has already purchased about 55 acres at the proposed site and is working to secure 100 more.
