Republicans and Democrats Honor Lugar’s Senate Work

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Republicans and Democrats are honoring GOP Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar on the Senate floor, praising him for his years of service.

Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday that Lugar represented the best of the Senate as an institution. McConnell says Lugar has put his “extraordinary talents” toward helping every citizen.

The chamber’s No. 2 Democrat, Sen. Dick Durbin, says Lugar has been an important voice in the Senate for decades and that his wisdom will be missed.

Lugar is retiring from the Senate in early 2013. He lost a GOP primary to Richard Mourdock, who lost to incoming Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in November’s general election.
