Rolling slowdowns planned Wednesday on U.S. 20 in Elkhart County

The Lead Off

  • Rolling slowdowns are planned Wednesday evening on eastbound U.S. 20 in Elkhart County for overhead sign removal work.
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation says lane restrictions will begin around 5 p.m. near State Road 19.
  • Crews will conduct short rolling traffic stops between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to complete the removal.

ELKHART COUNTY, IND. (WOWO) The Indiana Department of Transportation is planning temporary traffic restrictions on U.S. 20 Wednesday evening in Elkhart County as crews work to remove an overhead sign structure.

Officials say the work will take place on eastbound U.S. 20 near the interchange with State Road 19 and will require both lane restrictions and rolling slowdowns.

Evening lane restrictions scheduled

According to INDOT, crews will begin alternating lane restrictions at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The restrictions will affect all lanes of eastbound U.S. 20, along with the passing lane of westbound U.S. 20, as crews prepare the area for overhead sign removal.

Rolling slowdowns planned to remove structure

From approximately 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., crews will conduct two rolling slowdowns in the eastbound lanes to complete the removal of the overhead structure.

Each slowdown is expected to last about 10 minutes, with at least a 20-minute break between each operation, according to INDOT.

Officials say the brief traffic stops are necessary to safely bring down the overhead sign structure.

Drivers urged to use caution

INDOT is advising drivers to slow down, remain alert, and follow all posted signage and instructions from traffic control personnel while traveling through the work zone.

Temporary directional signage will remain in place until a replacement overhead structure can be installed.

Officials also noted that all work is weather-dependent and schedules may change if conditions require adjustments.

Next steps

The overhead sign removal is expected to be completed during Wednesday night’s scheduled work period, with INDOT indicating that additional traffic control measures will remain in place as needed until replacement signage is installed and normal traffic flow is restored.
