KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (WOWO): An online scam has suckered the city of Kendallville out of almost $50,000.

According to the Journal Gazette, someone impersonating the town’s mayor sent an email to the City Clerk-Treasurer, Sheryl Hanes, instructing her to pay a “consulting fee” of $48,500 to a company using a Californian bank account immediately.

The problem is the email never came from the Mayor, and by the time Hanes figured it out, the transfer was complete and the cash was lost. The city’s bank was also unsuccessful in reversing the transaction.

Police are looking into this case as a cyber fraud investigation, alongside the Indiana State Police and the FBI.
