School lunch competition coming to World Food Championships in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO) — Five chefs will compete to create healthy, affordable and appealing school lunches during the 2026 World Food Championships in Indianapolis this weekend.

The MAHA School Food Showdown is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center’s Fall Creek Pavilion. The competition, presented by the nonprofit MAHA Center, will focus on developing nutritious school meals that can be prepared within the budget and equipment limitations of school cafeterias.

Celebrity chef and retired U.S. Army veteran Andre Rush will serve as emcee for the event.

The competition will feature two rounds, beginning with five chefs from school foodservice provider Taher working alongside student sous chefs. Competitors will first complete a timed whole-chicken preparation challenge before creating assigned school lunch menus.

Judges will evaluate the meals based on taste, student appeal, cooking techniques, presentation and practicality for school foodservice operations.

The two highest-scoring chefs will advance to a final round called “The Next Generation Lunch Tray.” Finalists will have 60 minutes to prepare a school lunch using identical sets of ingredients, incorporating fresh produce, whole grains and familiar dishes with international flavors.

Each meal must include protein, whole grains, vegetables, whole fruit and milk while meeting applicable USDA school meal requirements. Competitors must also demonstrate how their recipes could be prepared and served to 100 students using standard school kitchen equipment.

The winning chef will receive the MAHA School Food Champion Award.

Organizers say the competition is intended to demonstrate how schools can improve meal quality while maintaining affordability and meeting federal nutrition standards.

“There are roughly 30 million school lunches served every day. Students deserve food that’s real, nourishing, and actually tastes good,” said Deirdre Goldfarb, spokesperson for MAHA Center.

The event comes amid ongoing national discussions about school nutrition standards and the role of processed foods in children’s diets. MAHA Center says the competition supports its Eat Real Food campaign, which promotes whole and minimally processed foods.

The World Food Championships will run October 15 through 18, featuring culinary competitions, live cooking demonstrations, food tastings, entertainment and family activities.
