Senator Jim Banks Op Ed: America First Investment in Indiana

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BANKS):  Over the past few decades, American manufacturing has faced major setbacks due to bad policy decisions that put corporate and foreign interests ahead of working Americans.

Thankfully, President Trump recognizes that the status quo hasn’t been working. For too long, American manufacturers and producers were thrown under a bus driven by their foreign competition. American jobs were shipped overseas while other countries took advantage of our trade relationships.

The American economy has seen tremendous plans for investments totaling more than $7 trillion—with a significant portion of that going into Indiana—since President Trump took office just three months ago.

Beginning last month, we heard that Honda is preparing to build their new Civic in Indiana—instead of Mexico—thanks to the President’s fair trade strategy.

General Motors announced that they’re expanding production at their Fort Wayne assembly plant. This expansion includes hiring several hundred temporary workers to meet increased demand for light-duty trucks.

Eli Lilly is investing $27 billion in U.S. manufacturing, with a significant portion allocated to Indiana. This investment focuses on producing diabetes and weight-loss medications, creating thousands of jobs and reinforcing Indiana’s position in the pharmaceutical industry.

Swiss pharmaceuticals company Roche has chosen Indiana for a new plant, announcing a total investment of $50 billion in the United States over the next five years.

Guardian Bikes has announced a $19 million investment to establish the first large-scale bicycle frame manufacturing facility in the U.S., located in Indiana.

As part of its $23 billion investment in American manufacturing, pharmaceutical maker Novartis plans to expand its facility in Indianapolis focused on cancer treatment.

This historic surge of investment is no coincidence. It’s the result of a bold trade agenda from the White House that unapologetically puts America and our workers first. Through fair trade, we’re creating jobs and boosting the Made-in-America economy.

While Indiana is one of the top recipients of these investments, the America First trade agenda is having massively positive impact across the entire country.

Nationwide, the President has secured $7 trillion in investments into the United States. Keep in mind, we’re just over 100 days into this administration. If these massive investments have been possible only 3 months in, imagine the success we’ll see during the next three and a half years.

In these past three months, through these investments and fair-trade policies, President Trump has also created 345,000 jobs, including 27,000 construction jobs and 9,000 manufacturing jobs.

This is a tremendous turnaround from the last administration. Under Biden, 6,000 manufacturing jobs were lost per month from January 2023 to December 2024.

That decline isn’t just a statistic — it was felt by communities across Indiana and the country, where factories closed, shifts were cut, and opportunities faded.

But the contrast today couldn’t be clearer. In just a few short months, we’ve seen a renewed focus on revitalizing domestic industry and restoring pride in American manufacturing.

We’re witnessing this historic reversal just over 100 days into this new administration, in large part because of these new investments reinvigorating our industries.

President Trump knows we need to recalibrate our trade agenda to promote investment, productivity, security, and make sure our producers are treated fairly.

That’s exactly what he’s done—especially across Indiana—and he’s just getting started.

The shift we’ve seen towards Made-in-America manufacturing is incredible, and I’m working every day in the Senate to back up President Trump, support his commonsense trade agenda, and keep the wins coming for hardworking Hoosiers.
