SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A central Indiana man on trial for murder has pleaded to lesser charges in the slaying of a girlfriend whose remains were found on his property last July.
Forty-seven-year-old Scott Schuck of Shelbyville pleaded guilty to aiding voluntary manslaughter and being a habitual offender. He'll be sentenced to 30 years in prison on April 15.
Defense attorney Andy Baldwin said in his opening statement Tuesday that it was Schuck's mother, Wilma, who strangled 33-year-old Rebecca Cassidy in April 2010. Special Prosecutor Stephen Koester called that theory “dubious'' but says the state is satisfied someone is being held responsible for Cassidy's death.
As part of the plea deal, Wilma Schuck cannot be charged in connection with the crime. She doesn't have a published telephone number and couldn't be reached for comment.
