Sheriff Offers Reward in Gary Officer’s Death

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ The Lake County sheriff is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the shooting death of a Gary police officer.

The Post-Tribune reports Sheriff John Buncich offered the reward Wednesday, three days after Gary Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield was found dead in his patrol car.

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson had said Tuesday she was “fairly confident'' that a person of interest who's been held since Sunday was the person responsible for Westerfield's slaying.

Westerfield, a 19-year police veteran and the father of four daughters, died on his 47th birthday. His funeral is scheduled for Monday at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary.
