St. Joseph County Officials Consider Power Plant Incentives

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Leaders in St. Joseph County are deciding how much they should offer in incentives to a company that has proposed a natural gas-fired electricity plant near New Carlisle.

A development agreement that included incentives for St. Joseph Energy Center LLC of more than $80 million _ which could rise to $145.4 million _ was set for a public hearing this week. But the hearing was canceled at the developer's request and some county members have said they think the deal is too large.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the company plans to spend $500 million on the plant that's expected to create 500 construction jobs over three years and 20 permanent full-time jobs.

The council is expected to revisit the development agreement on Sept. 22.
