State Settles with Brown Mackie College Over Fraudulent Recruiting

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Some local college students could get some of their loans forgiven.

The state of Indiana joined 37 other states in settling a lawsuit with Brown Mackie College and The Art Institutes. The parent company of the two schools, Education Management Corporation, settled for $95.5 million.

The suit claimed the school used deceptive recruitment practices that led to students getting overextended with debt without the benefit of a useful degree. Indiana will get $1.2 million of the settlement money.

EDMC has set up a toll free number that students of Brown Mackie College and The Art Institute can call with any questions about student loan debt forgiveness at 1-855-725-4301. A mailed notice will also be sent to students within 90 days.
