Suspect in custody after fatal stabbing at Branch County meat processing plant

COLDWATER, MICH. (WOWO) A 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed Monday evening following a workplace altercation at a meat processing facility in Coldwater, according to Coldwater Public Safety.

Officials tell News 10 Lansing that emergency crews were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to Clemens Food Group in response to a report of a stabbing.


Incident reported at meat processing facility


Investigators say the victim, identified as 21-year-old Brandon Velasquez Chavez, was working inside the facility when he became involved in a verbal argument with a co-worker.

According to witnesses, the confrontation occurred while the two employees were working near each other on the job floor. Authorities said the argument escalated before the suspect allegedly stabbed Chavez in the back.


Emergency response and death at scene
Deputies with the Branch County Sheriff’s Office were the first to arrive on scene and detained the suspect shortly after the incident.

Medics from LifeCare Ambulance and the Coldwater Fire Department attempted lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed the victim’s identity as Brandon Velasquez Chavez.


Suspect arrested and held in custody


Authorities say a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the stabbing. His identity has not been released pending arraignment.

The suspect was lodged at the Branch County Jail following his arrest.


Investigation continues


Coldwater Public Safety says the investigation remains active. Officials have not released additional details regarding a possible motive or whether prior conflict existed between the individuals involved.
