SWANTON, OH (WOWO) The Swanton Police Department and village municipal offices suffered extensive damage after a fire Tuesday morning, leaving the building likely a total loss.

Village officials say the fire was discovered in the attic around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday. In a social media update, the Village of Swanton said the fire appears to have originated from an exploded light ballast. Everyone inside the building was evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported.

The full extent of the damage and how long the municipal building will remain closed has not yet been determined. Swanton police say walk-in services are temporarily unavailable, though officers remain on duty in the community. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with some calls, and residents are asked to continue calling 911 for emergencies. Non-emergency calls should be directed to the sheriff’s office.

Village officials say municipal services and staff housed in the Chestnut Street building are being relocated to the Swanton Community Center. Crews are working to establish temporary internet access, move staff and resume normal operations, which the village hopes to have in place by Monday.

Utility billing was partially completed before the fire and is expected to resume next week. The utility drop box will be relocated outside the community center. Deliveries previously sent to the municipal building will be redirected to the Swanton Fire Department.

Wednesday night’s village council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Swanton Middle School media room and is expected to be livestreamed.

Village Administrator Shannon Shulters said restoration planning is already underway, with meetings scheduled with a restoration services company and an insurance adjuster.

“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all Village departments for their rapid response and exceptional teamwork during this unexpected and unfortunate event,” Shulters said in a statement released by the village.
