INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana teachers and students heading back to school for the new school year are facing the task of getting up to speed on the state's new academic standards.
Indiana adopted the standards in April after becoming the first state in the nation to pull out of the national Common Core standards.
The state Department of Education held 19 training sessions over the summer on the standards and produced teacher resource guides.
But education consultant Schauna Findlay Relue tells The Times of Munster teachers and students will face a fast turnaround to teach and learn this year. Relue was one of the experts who evaluated Indiana's new standards.
East Chicago schools Superintendent Youssef Yomtoob says the new standards are not vastly different from Common Core standards.
