Teen Jumps from Sinking Vehicle

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an accident that happened at the Beaver Dam lake public access boat ramp Saturday, around 10:40 A.M. 15-year-old Aubert Clevenger, of Silver Lake, was trying to back his uncle’s vehicle with a boat trailer attached to it down the ramp to launch his uncle’s boat when the accident happened. 55-year-old David Swihart, also of Silver Lake, was in the boat on the trailer and let Aubert, who was unlicensed, to back the boat trailer down the ramp. Conservation Officers determined that Aubert panicked because of his inexperience in driving with a trailer attached. As he was backing up, Aubert pressed the gas instead of the brake, which caused the vehicle and trailer to accelerate into the lake and go under water. Aubert had left the driver’s door open and jumped from the vehicle as it started to sink, then swam to shore. The vehicle ended up around 25 yards into the lake with only the open back hatch door of the vehicle showing. No charges were filed against David Swihart.
