SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP): The National Weather Service reports the temperature dropped to 7 below in South Bend at 5:09 a.m. Saturday, breaking the record for Feb. 28.
The previous record low was 4 below, set last year. It was the second straight day the northern Indiana city set a record. On Friday, the temperature dropped to 8 below, breaking the record of 5 below set in 1897. The weather service reports that the 16 days ending Feb. 27 were the coldest ever for late February with an average temperature of 11. 4 degrees.
The normal high temperature for Feb. 28 is 40. The normal low is 24.
The city set a record Thursday for February snowfall with 35.9 inches of snow. The old mark of 35.5 inches was set in 1894.
