TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – Terre Haute officials are launching a program to trap and neuter feral and roaming cats in hopes of reducing the population of unwanted animals.

PetSmart Charities has awarded the city $28,500 for the program in which volunteers will pick up cats, take them to veterinarians for sterilization and a rabies vaccination and then return them at no cost.

Police code enforcement division superintendent Laurie Tharp tells the Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/1Hbm5Bw ) the city receives 100 to 150 calls each year to pick up cats. Similar programs are in place in other cities, including Indianapolis.

Tharp says the city can receive up to $100,000 a year for two years once the current grant is exhausted.

Volunteers are being sought to help with the program.
