UPDATE: Identity released for man killed after crashing into St. Mary’s River

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – A man was pronounced dead in Fort Wayne early Sunday morning after crashing into the St. Mary’s River.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., Fort Wayne police responded to the intersection of Rudisill Blvd. and Broadway to reports of a possible vehicle in the river.

Upon arrival, officers found the vehicle fully submerged.

Fort Wayne Fire Department personnel arrived to the scene, and began to place rafts, as well as send divers, into the river.

Divers were able to get to the vehicle and secure it to a cable, allowing it to be pulled from the river.

They also found a man still inside the vehicle, who was pronounced deceased by medics.

He was later identified as Brian Coburn, 36 of South Whitley, Indiana. The Allen County Coroner reports he died by drowning. His cause of death was ruled an accident.

The crash is still under investigation.
