FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — The victim has been identified as 76-year-old James E. Vanburen of Fort Wayne.

It happened Wednesday night just after 8 am.

Fort Wayne Police say the crash happened near East State Boulevard and Hobson Road when Vanburen who was using a walker as a makeshift wheelchair attempted to cross State Boulevard in an unlit area – outside of any designated crosswalk.

A motorist was unable to stop in time – Officials say the pedestrian died later at the hospital. Speed and impairment were not factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
