Warming centers set to open for incoming cold weather

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): With more cold weather in the forecast, the City of Fort Wayne is opening warming centers for those who need a place to stay.

This is the 3rd time this winter the winter weather contingency plan has been activated.

Starting Wednesday, the Rescue Mission at 301 W. Superior Street will open its doors to both men and women for overnight accommodations. The Rescue Mission’s level one warming center is open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. when temperatures reach 40 degrees. Its level two warming center is open every day with additional space from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. when temperatures reach 32 degrees.

Other warming locations include:

  • Wednesday; Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday-Friday; Community Center, 233 W. Main St.; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday-Sunday; Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, United Way of Allen County, Park Center and Just Neighbors Interfaith Homeless Network work with the City to provide the response and resources to individuals needing shelter from health-threatening conditions because of weather conditions.
